The Nature Of Light | David Trubridge x Crestline

Recently we opened our Wellington and Auckland showrooms for The Nature of Light. An evening with Beca Lighting and celebrated New Zealand designer David Trubridge, exploring how light, nature, and wellbeing intersect in the workplace. Beca Lighting brought their human-centred, technically rigorous approach to illumination, while David shared how his sculptural, nature inspired forms translate landscapes and natural patterns into gentle, atmospheric light.

The night began with a conversation about how daylight, shadow, and colour temperature shape how we feel at work; and how organic forms can soften the harder edges of commercial spaces. Guests then moved into a hands-on workshop, working in small groups around tables laid with simple materials: card, balloons, tape, and glue. Using the balloons as moulds and supports, they explored how a flat plane could be transformed into three-dimensional forms that might one day inform a light shade design.

As everyone worked, David wandered between tables, chatting with guests and checking out the ideas taking shape. At the end of the workshop, he picked two favourites, and we gifted each of those designers his new Dusk Portable Lamp.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Wellington and Auckland. We can’t wait to see you again at next years Five Senses in Design events!
